The next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Astra compact will be offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a station wagon version, CEO Michael Lohscheller said in an interview with Automotive News Europe.

The new Astra will start with diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid versions, he said. An estate would once again "absolutely" be offered alongside the hatchback, Lohscheller said.

Lohscheller would not comment on whether the Astra will follow the 308 in offering a full-electric version.

Vauxhall currently sells full-electric versions of its Corsa small car and Mokka small SUV, along with battery-powered commercial and passenger vans.
