Here is a roundup of UK magazine reviews of the new Astra L:

AutoCar:

Clearly there are both gains and losses to report with this car; significant shifts in positioning, too. Weighing them up, it’s easy to confirm that this is a better and more modern Astra than its predecessor - albeit, in some ways, also a less practical one. It's a more desirable one, too - but with a price to match.

Auto Express:

Existing Vauxhall Astra owners should find plenty to like here, with a decent petrol engine, plenty of standard equipment and sharper dynamics than the previous generation. We’re a little less convinced that the Mk8 model really has enough star qualities to stand out in a crowded, under-pressure market that’s still full of talented rivals. The devil will be in the detail of how Vauxhall’s finance deals stack up against those of its competitors.

What Car:

The Vauxhall Astra manages to blend value with comfort, eager performance and tidy handling. We’d suggest sticking with the cheaper trim levels to make the most of the Astra’s keen pricing, and heading for the petrol engine as the better all-rounder.

Car Magazine:

Based on looks alone, it's a much better bet than the old Astra – and dare we say it, quite desirable. Beyond that, it's well-priced, packed with equipment, and proves to be an impressively refined steer. Vauxhall is on a bit of a roll with its latest models, and the Astra continues the upward trend.

Based on early impressions, it's a strong challenger to the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, although the former will be a sportier drive for enthusiasts and the latter still has brand values Vauxhall would kill for. As for how it compares with the impressive SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia, we'll need to compare them on UK roads.

Top Gear:

There's nothing eccentric about the Astra formula. It competes in one of the most rigidly-defined parts of the car market, and it pretty much matches all the benchmarks, even if it busts through none.

It's decent to drive, smart looking and well finished. Besides, Vauxhall has clamped down on ownership costs, so it's accessible too. The Astra's not a car to set your heart on fire, or your pants, but it feels satisfyingly well sorted.
